In other incidents in recent weeks, hackers targeting B.C. libraries tried to extort payment not to release information about users, while retailer London Drugs was forced to shut its stores for more than a week to deal with a cybersecurity breach.
The government source said staff were told there was no indication that the government incident was related to either the library hack or the London Drugs shutdown, but the matter was still under investigation.
But keeping our knowledge exclusively online is extremely dangerous. What if the power goes out globally as a result of some type of freak event, attack or natural disaster? We’d lose everything and have to start from scratch in our scientific understanding of everything … again.
Why are they suddenly all reporting on this now, this happened a week ago and at the time there was only a few small news outlets covering it, now they're suddenly all covering it and it's on the front page of Google News.
